Dear members of the PA,

we plan a new experiment [1] where we want to assess the _visual_
differences one has to reckon when using different measuring devices
of the same type for the monitor calibration. We ask you for your
participation by sending us a one-week loan of the following
measurement devices

i1 Pro
i1 Pro 2
i1 Display 3
Discus
GL-Optic Minispectrometer

If you want to submit samples for those devices we welcome that. If
you think other devices should be included please contact us also.

The tests are planned for the week 32 (2012-08-6 till 2012-08-10). If
you like to participate with your devices in this test please mail the
devices to us till Friday this week (2012-08-03). In addition to the
tests described here we will make a "reference" measurement on the
stable LED normal for comparison in half a year (next PA meeting). We
will then send the devices back to you latest on August 13th.

We also welcome your feedback about the planned experiment:

Experiment details
==================

The planned procedure for this test (in darkroom conditions) is:

1) Calibrate (hardware-calibration) a monitor with different samples
of a specific measuring device.

2) Switch between the different calibrations and visually compare if a
difference can be seen for the following three test pictures
a) white
b) skin tone
c) Fogra iPunkt test file

and to describe this difference in quality and quantity.

3) Measure the monitor for white, skin tone and grey with a
tele-spectroradiometer (CS-2000)

Analysis
---------

4) Analyze descriptions given in 2) to find if the participants
describe "the same" or see something different.

5) Analyse measurements to

find a possible correlation of the measurements to the descriptions
given in 2)

6) try to visually fine-tune the white-point and repeat beginning from
step 2)

We plan to do the tests on a wide-gamut and a standard gamut display.

If someone is close to Munich and wants to join the visual tests
please contact us direct.

We are looking forward the hopefully interesting results.

Best regards
Peter

[1] In the normlight project we tested several monitor measurement
devices already. The comparisons where focused on colorimetrical
results and showed the variation you have to expect between different
device types. Not surprisingly the differences between different
samples of the _same_ model where much smaller.

Nontheless daily experience shows that even sometimes different
samples of the same calibration device might lead to visual different
results for a monitor calibration. It is extremely important to get a
better understanding of this when we are looking for an optimal
softproof and how to validate the softproof quality. Therefore we want
to focus on the visual experience in the new experiment.
